Executive Summary

Every Adventist youth event faces a fundamental tension: how contemporary can we be before we lose our theological substance? How traditional must we remain before we lose our young people? This Living Research Project examines the evidence around cultural accessibility and theological depth in youth events across multiple divisions and denominations, investigating models that successfully combine both.

Academic databases (Google Scholar, Andrews University Digital Commons, JAYYAM), denominational archives (GC Youth Ministries, division-level youth ministry resources), generational research institutions (Barna Group, American Survey Center, Springtide Research Institute, PRRI), and ministry practitioner literature. Search terms included: "youth ministry theological depth accessibility," "contemporary worship theological substance," "Adventist youth event theology," "Gen Z tradition liturgy return," "high-demand denomination retention," "Almost Christian moralistic therapeutic deism," "Valuegenesis faith maturity," and "content-container distinction missiology.".

Peer-reviewed research, large-scale survey data, denominational studies, and practitioner literature with documented implementation. Preference for post-2020 sources, with foundational sources included regardless of date.

The analysis applies a content-container framework from missiology, evaluating evidence for the claim that theological content and cultural presentation are independent variables that can be optimised separately.

English-language only. No content analysis of actual event programming. No primary data from event attendees. No controlled comparison of event types.
