Executive Summary

What gets measured gets managed — and in Adventist youth ministry, what gets measured is almost exclusively attendance. How many came to youth group? How many attended the conference? How many were baptised? These numbers tell us something, but they tell us remarkably little about the question that matters most: are young people actually growing in their relationship with God?

Research was conducted across academic databases (Google Scholar, ERIC, Andrews University Digital Commons, MDPI Religions), denominational archives (ASTR, GC Youth Ministries, Valuegenesis project), practitioner platforms (Barna Group, ACSI, Springtide Research Institute, Hartford Institute), and ministry technology providers (Feed.Bible, Pushpay, Tithe.ly). Search terms included: "spiritual formation assessment," "youth ministry metrics beyond attendance," "church health measurement tools," "Adventist spiritual growth measurement," "Valuegenesis faith formation," "EPIC attender survey," and "flourishing faith index.".

Peer-reviewed research, research-validated assessment tools, denominational studies with institutional authority, and practitioner publications with documented implementation. Preference for sources published since 2018, with foundational sources (REVEAL, Valuegenesis) included regardless of age.

The analysis categorises existing tools by measurement approach (self-report, behavioural, relational, narrative), evaluates their psychometric properties where available, and assesses cross-cultural adaptability for global Adventist contexts.

English-language search only. No primary data collection. Assessment tool evaluation based on published documentation rather than independent validation testing.
